Task 2 - create report discussing aspects of a game
1)Media Text: This is a form of media that can be examined by the public; this can range newspapers, posters, magazines, leaflets and advertisements.
The comparison between the three games: First of all, Silent Hill 2 was in a lot of media back in the day when it was a thing. Zoo Tycoon however was not as popular although it was still up there although it had very mixed reviews.
2)
Genre: There are many videogame genres. This is the type of game you are playing. Some are:
Action(Princess Kaguya) eg fighting, shooting, levels
Shooter(Half-Life) eg shooting, story, adventure
Action-adventure(Fallout) eg shooting, open world, adventure
Adventure(Alan Wake) eg big world, adventure, story
Role-playing(Costume Quest) eg levelling up, story, fighting w/abilities
Simulation(Shower With Your Dad Simulator) eg realism, difficult
Sports(Tony Hawk's Underground 2) eg competitive, difficult, lots of tricks
Strategy(Starcraft) eg competitive, strategic, fighting
Survival horror(Silent Hill 2) eg story, adventuring, shooter
Massively multiplayer online(RIFT) eg fighting, open world, adventure
Racing(Carmageddon II) eg competitive, action
Platforming(Battleblock Theatre) eg story, fighting, adventure
Music(Rocksmith 2014) eg difficult, scores
3)Selection of Content: This is the content of the game and what it has in it. Such as the story, the violence, the drugs, the language, the horror, the comedy and even the aliens. The content could also include DLC (downloadable content) or pre-order exclusives. The content chosen is based on the type of game that is being created and what the fans and developers would want.
The comparison between the three games are that the selection of content is completely different from each other as Zoo Tycoon has a lot of animals, it has mild themes of violence as the animals may attack each other or humans and it also has a sort of system where you have to maintain the zoo which may be difficult for younger audiences to understand properly. On the other hand Silent Hill 2 has very different content such as violence with various weapons, blood/gore, use of drugs such as 'heath drinks' and 'ampoules' to restore health/stamina, disturbing scenes which may scare or disgust some people. Yellowbrick Woods will probably have some violence and gore but aside from that it should be okay.
4)Construction of Content: Construction of content is how the game is set out like what is the story and how will it affect the characters and other things in the games universe. It can also mean what is the content of the game which is basically anything that you put into the game. There can be narratives, layouts, captions, anchorage.
The comparison between the three games are that silent hill 2 is definitely more of a story based game however has violence as well, zoo tycoon doesn't really have a story or a setting other than a zoo therefore it is much different, yellow brick woods is more like Silent Hill 2 in this case.
5)Codes and Conventions: This is if your game uses codes and conventions. Such as the camera angle (third/first person), the HUD, how the level is designed, the character design is also important in this situation. You also need to ask if it's similar to other games in it's genre. You need to ask how these help the player identify the type of game they may be playing. There are also things called Semiotics. Semiotics is the study of the meaning of signs and symbols and can be defined as the media term for reading and decoding something. For example, in Silent Hill 2 there is a green highlighted picture in the inventory screen, this can be assumed by the player to be a health bar, but you need to figure that out on your own.
The comparison between the three games are they are all different in their own ways such as perspective, level design and models. They each have their own things and nothing really similar other than being games and both silent hill 2 and yellowbrick woods being third person action/shooters.
6)Target Demographic: This is the type of audience you want your game to centre around. The type of audience can vary from age to gender to even where in the world they live, depending on these things people might be a big fan of your game or the complete opposite, you need to either make your game something that everyone will like or make your game something that you want a certain audience appeal from. You may not ever get the appeal of literally everyone.
The comparison between the three games are that silent hill 2 is much more dark and violent and then zoo tycoon is more child friendly and fun whereas yellow brick woods is action/horror with a moderate amount of violence. This is the difference between the demographics, zoo tycoon is for children and the other two games are not.
