Unit 1 Task 1 - Pre-Production Requirements for Wayne's Maze Game

Maze Game
Budget
When making a maze game you need a budget and depending on what engine you make the game on you might need to have a pretty high budget. Considering this is a simple maze game created in game maker then a normal budget would be something like £3000 if you are making it on your own as first you will need a pc, usually people like to pay a lot for a computer but you should only need to pay about £400-600. Now you have that out of the way then you might need to install Gamemaker, to get the full version of it you will need to pay around £60 if you only want your game on pc, otherwise you'll have to pay £500 to import your game to phones and other platforms. You will then need to make your game which shouldn't cost anything unless you want to hire people to help you which you shouldn't need to do however, if you want a high quality looking game then you will need to buy Photoshop and/or Fireworks which will cost around £200-500. You can also get free programs like Audacity to record sounds that you might want to put into your game. Once you have all the software and hardware you need then you can make your game, once you have finished your game then you can choose to either ask a big company to publish your game or go onto Steam Greenlight and pay £70 to have your game up for possible publishing on steam as long as you promote it enough and a lot of people like it, after that you can relax and let the money flow. Grand Theft Auto V had a budget of 265 million dollars which is a really big amount of money but because of the size of the game and how many people worked on it then that kind of cost is expected.

Time
You have to make sure you have enough time on your hands so you should plan out when you are working on your game and when you aren't working on it as that type of planning will help you get it finished faster and let you have lots of time for other things like hobbies or a part time job. You can also try to stop doing certain things so you have some free time left for you to work a bit more on your game. If you haven't got enough time then you will have to ask other people to help you with the project but if no-one will help you then you'll have to abandon or postpone the project for later. You need to get all the software you want first of all though so you might need to make a bit of cash to be able to pay for it all but once you have it all bought and installed then all you need to do is make sure you have a few hours each week to work on your game. A game that really wasn't good with time was Duke Nukem Forever as it took over 10 years to finally finish development. It went through multiple engines in it's development and only just came out in 2011 where it got pretty bad reviews and a lot of people were disappointed as it wasn't as good as they wanted it to be. Taking too much time on a game can end up being very bad. 

Materials
The materials you may need will most likely be sounds and pictures which you can either get off of the internet or travel around and find some suitable pictures you might want to use for your maps or if you want some sounds you can take a camera or sound recorder into the woods or somewhere similar and record the exact sounds you want, make sure to have a decent recording device so you get the best quality audio in your game. A lot of visual novel games require materials, mainly pictures of different places that developers want to portray in the game so it takes a long time to make as they need to get enough pictures of different places and draw those pictures to look more like a cartoon and not seem like just pictures. An example of this would be Katawa Shoujo as it has a lot of pictures drawn from photos and sounds taken from different places such as restaurants and parks.
